The deadlift punishes position more than any other lift. There is no rack to bail into and no eccentric to warn you — the setup you build in the first two seconds determines whether the rep is safe or expensive.
These are the seven deadlift form mistakes that appear most often in commercial gyms, why each one happens, and the correction that actually works rather than the cue that only sounds good.

Correct conventional deadlift technique, step by step
Set the bar over the mid-foot
Stand with the bar roughly over the middle of your foot, about 2 to 3 cm from the shins. This is the single most important measurement in the setup — get it wrong and every other cue fails.
Hinge down and take the grip
Push the hips back and bend the knees only enough to reach the bar. Grip just outside the legs. Do not move the bar toward you and do not let your hips drop into a squat.
Pull the slack out
Take the tension into your arms and lats until you hear the plates click against the collars. Lifting from a loose bar is what causes the jerk that rounds the back.
Set the back and brace
Chest up, lats engaged as if squeezing oranges in the armpits, lower back in a neutral curve. Breathe into the belly and brace hard before anything moves.
Push the floor away
Drive through the whole foot and keep the bar dragging up the shins. Hips and shoulders rise together — the shoulders should stay slightly ahead of the bar until it passes the knee.
Lock out with the glutes
Finish by driving the hips forward into the bar and squeezing the glutes. Stand tall without leaning back or hyperextending the spine, then reverse the same path to set the bar down.
The 7 most common deadlift form mistakes
01Rounded lower back
What it looks like
The lumbar spine flexes as the bar leaves the floor, most visibly on the heaviest rep.
Why it happens
Bracing that fails at the start, a bar set too far forward, or a load beyond your current positional strength.
The fix
Rebuild the setup: bar over mid-foot, slack pulled out, chest up, lats tight, then brace. Reduce the load until you can hold a neutral spine for every rep, and add paused deadlifts one inch off the floor to train the position directly.
02Hips shooting up first
What it looks like
The hips rise while the bar is still on the floor, turning the lift into a stiff-legged pull.
Why it happens
Starting with the hips too low, so the legs have nothing left to push with, or quads that are weak relative to the back.
The fix
Raise the starting hip position until your shoulders sit just in front of the bar and your shins are close to vertical. Cue "push the floor away" rather than "pull the bar up", and add deficit deadlifts or front squats for leg drive.
03Bar drifting away from the shins
What it looks like
A gap opens between the bar and your legs during the pull, and the bar swings forward at the knee.
Why it happens
Lats that disengage under load, or a starting position too far from the mid-foot.
The fix
Keep the bar in contact with the legs the entire way. Engage the lats hard before the pull and think of pulling the bar backward into you as much as upward. Wear long socks — the scrape on your shins is feedback.
04Jerking the bar off the floor
What it looks like
A visible dip or bounce before the bar moves, and a loud rattle from the plates.
Why it happens
Not taking the slack out of the bar and your own joints before the pull starts.
The fix
Add a deliberate slack-pull phase to every rep: build tension until you hear the click, then pull. It costs one second and removes the spike of force that rounds the spine.
05Hyperextending at lockout
What it looks like
You lean back at the top, ribs flared, shoulders behind the hips.
Why it happens
Thinking lockout means leaning back, usually copied from a competition standard that does not require it.
The fix
Lockout is standing tall: hips through, glutes squeezed, ribs down, spine stacked. Nothing more. Leaning back adds compression to the lumbar spine and no training effect.
06Squatting the deadlift
What it looks like
The hips start very low, the shins are well past the bar, and the knees have to travel backward before the bar can rise.
Why it happens
Applying squat cues to a hinge, or setting the hips low to feel stronger at the start.
The fix
The deadlift is a hinge, not a squat. Set the hips high enough that the shins are near vertical and the shoulders are just in front of the bar. If the bar has to go around the knees, the hips were too low.
07Uneven pull
What it looks like
One side of the bar leaves the floor first, or the bar tilts through the whole pull.
Why it happens
Mixed grip pulling one shoulder forward, an asymmetric setup, or a genuine strength difference.
The fix
Alternate your mixed grip between sets, or switch to a hook grip or straps to remove the rotation. Film from the front to confirm, and add single-leg Romanian deadlifts to address the imbalance.
How to check your own form
Film from the side at hip height
The deadlift is a sagittal-plane lift — almost every fault, from back rounding to bar drift, is visible from a clean side view. Set the phone at hip height, not on the floor.
Keep the plates and your head in frame
You need the bar path from the floor to lockout. Cropping the top of the rep hides hyperextension; cropping the floor hides the setup.
Watch the first 20 centimetres in slow motion
Nearly every deadlift fault is decided in the break from the floor. Slow that portion down and check whether hips and shoulders rise at the same rate.
Compare your top set to your warm-up
If your position at 60 percent looks nothing like your position at 90 percent, the problem is load management, not technique knowledge.

Why does my lower back round when I deadlift?
Usually one of three things: you start pulling before the slack is out of the bar, the bar sits too far forward of your mid-foot, or the load is simply heavier than the position you can hold. Rebuild the setup, add a deliberate slack-pull, and drop the weight until every rep keeps a neutral spine. Paused deadlifts just off the floor build that position faster than anything else.
Where should the bar start on a deadlift?
Directly over the middle of your foot, roughly 2 to 3 cm away from your shins when you stand up. This puts the bar in line with your centre of mass so it can travel in a near-vertical path. Almost every deadlift fault downstream traces back to getting this measurement wrong.
Are my hips supposed to be high or low on a deadlift?
High enough that your shins are close to vertical and your shoulders sit just in front of the bar. Starting with the hips very low turns the lift into a squat the bar cannot travel around, which is why the hips shoot up as soon as the weight moves. Your correct hip height depends on your limb lengths, so find it by looking at the shin angle rather than copying someone else.
Is it bad to deadlift with a rounded upper back?
A slightly rounded thoracic spine with a neutral lumbar spine is a deliberate choice for many strong lifters and is far less concerning than lumbar flexion. The lower back is where the risk lives. If your lumbar spine flexes under load, treat it as a fault regardless of how your upper back looks.
Can I check my deadlift form on my own?
Yes, and the deadlift is the easiest lift to self-check because a single side view captures nearly everything. Film at hip height with the full body and the bar in frame, then judge the break from the floor.
