Correct walking and reverse lunge technique, step by step
Set the stance
Feet hip-width apart, not on a tightrope. A narrow line makes balance the limiting factor instead of the legs.
Step and set the length
Step forward or backward far enough that at the bottom both knees form roughly 90 degrees. Too short loads the knee; too long makes the hips do all the work.
Descend vertically
Drop the back knee straight down toward the floor rather than pushing the body forward. Keep the torso upright with the ribs stacked over the pelvis.
Stop just above the floor
Bring the back knee to within a couple of centimetres of the floor without resting on it. Keep the front heel firmly planted.
Drive through the front heel
Push through the whole front foot with the weight biased toward the heel, and return without letting the front knee drift inward.

01Front knee caving inward
What it looks like
The front knee tracks toward the midline as you push out of the bottom.
Why it happens
Weak or under-recruited glute medius — far more exposed here than in a bilateral squat.
The fix
Cue the knee toward the second toe and actively press it out on the way up. Add lateral band walks and single-leg glute bridges. Reduce the load until the knee tracks cleanly on every rep.
02Step too short
What it looks like
The front knee travels well past the toes and the front heel starts to lift.
Why it happens
A step length copied without adjusting to your own leg length.
The fix
Lengthen the step until both knees sit near 90 degrees at the bottom. Some forward knee travel is fine, but if the heel unloads, the step is too short.
03Torso pitching forward
What it looks like
The chest folds toward the front thigh at the bottom of each rep.
Why it happens
Weak quads relative to the load, or a brace that lets the trunk collapse.
The fix
Keep the ribs stacked over the pelvis and brace before the descent. If the fold persists, switch to reverse lunges, which are far easier to keep upright, and lower the load.
04Walking a tightrope
What it looks like
You wobble every rep and the front foot lands in line with the back foot.
Why it happens
A stance that is too narrow, which turns a leg exercise into a balance test.
The fix
Set the feet hip-width apart in both directions, as if standing on two rails rather than one line. Balance stops being the limiting factor immediately.
05Slamming the back knee
What it looks like
The back knee hits the floor at the bottom of each rep.
Why it happens
Uncontrolled descent, usually paired with a load that is too heavy.
The fix
Control the eccentric over two seconds and stop a couple of centimetres above the floor. If you cannot, the weight is too heavy for the current range.
06Ignoring the weak side
What it looks like
One side is visibly steadier, faster and deeper than the other.
Why it happens
Reps started on the strong side and matched by the weak one, which locks the gap in place.
The fix
Start every set with the weaker leg and cap the strong side at the reps the weak side achieved. Film from the front — a side-to-side difference is easy to see and easy to ignore.
How to check your own form
Film from 45 degrees in front
You need to see the knee tracking and the torso angle at once. A pure front view hides the forward fold; a pure side view hides the knee caving.
Record both sides in the same clip
Asymmetry is the whole point of unilateral work. Filming only your good side defeats the purpose.
Check the depth of the back knee
If the back knee stops well above the floor on one side only, that side is the weak one, regardless of how it felt.
Watch the front heel
A heel that lifts means the step was too short. It is one of the easiest faults to see and one of the most commonly missed.
