Dips build more upper-body pressing strength per minute than almost anything else, and they also generate more shoulder complaints than almost anything else. The difference between those two outcomes is almost entirely depth and shoulder position.
Here are the six dip form mistakes worth fixing, and the correction that keeps the shoulder out of trouble without giving up the exercise.

Support and set the shoulders
Start locked out with the shoulders pushed down away from the ears, not shrugged up. Hold that depression for the whole set.
Set the torso lean
A slight forward lean of 10 to 30 degrees emphasises the chest and is easier on the shoulder. Staying perfectly vertical loads the triceps more but demands more shoulder extension.
Brace and lock the legs
Squeeze the abs and glutes with the legs slightly forward and still. A swinging body means the reps are being thrown rather than pressed.
Descend to about 90 degrees
Lower under control until the upper arm is roughly parallel with the floor. Elbows stay tucked in at about 45 degrees, not flared to the sides.
Press back to full lockout
Push through the palms and finish with the arms straight and the shoulders still pushed down. Do not shrug up at the top.

01Going too deep
What it looks like
The shoulders drop below the elbows and you feel a stretch at the front of the shoulder joint.
Why it happens
Chasing range for its own sake, or letting bodyweight drop you past your controllable depth.
The fix
Stop when the upper arm is roughly parallel to the floor. Deeper adds a lot of anterior shoulder stress and very little muscle stimulus. If depth beyond that is your goal, earn it with a slow eccentric and no added load.
02Shrugged shoulders
What it looks like
The shoulders ride up toward the ears in the bottom position and the neck disappears.
Why it happens
Passive hanging on the bars instead of actively depressing the shoulder blades.
The fix
Push the shoulders down away from the ears before the first rep and hold it. Practise support holds and scapular dips — ten of each before the working sets teaches the position quickly.
03Elbows flaring out
What it looks like
Seen from behind, the elbows point outward at the bottom rather than back along the ribs.
Why it happens
Bars that are too wide, or trying to hit the chest by flaring instead of by leaning.
The fix
Use bars roughly shoulder-width and keep the elbows at about 45 degrees. To bias the chest, lean the torso forward rather than opening the elbows.
04Swinging through the reps
What it looks like
The legs kick forward on each rep and the body oscillates between reps.
Why it happens
Fatigue, or never bracing the body into a rigid line at the start.
The fix
Lock the legs slightly in front, squeeze the glutes and abs, and stop the set when the swing appears. Momentum removes exactly the range you are trying to train.
05Partial lockout
What it looks like
The arms never fully straighten at the top and the set becomes a series of short pulses.
Why it happens
Load or fatigue past the point where the triceps can finish the rep.
The fix
Finish every rep with straight arms and depressed shoulders. If you cannot, drop the added weight or use band assistance rather than shortening the range.
06Chin jammed to the chest
What it looks like
The head drops forward and the upper back rounds as you descend.
Why it happens
Watching your own depth, or a general loss of postural tension.
The fix
Keep the neck neutral with the eyes forward and the chest lifted. Film the set instead of trying to check your depth in real time.
How to check your own form
Film from the side at chest height
Depth and torso lean are both side-view variables. A camera on the floor pointing up will make your depth look shallower than it is.
Pause the video at your lowest point
Check the upper arm against horizontal. That single frame answers the depth question more reliably than any sensation.
Look at the neck line
If your neck disappears at the bottom, your shoulders are shrugging. It is the easiest visual tell for a fault you cannot feel.
Check reps at the end of the set
Shrugging, swinging and shortened lockouts all appear late. The first two reps of a dip set look good for nearly everyone.

Usually a combination of excessive depth, shoulders shrugging up toward the ears at the bottom, and elbows flaring wide. Fix all three: stop at parallel, actively push the shoulders down before the first rep, and keep the elbows at about 45 degrees. Should I lean forward on dips?
If you want to emphasise the chest, yes — a 10 to 30 degree forward lean shifts the work toward the lower pecs and is generally kinder to the shoulder. Staying vertical biases the triceps but requires more shoulder extension, so it demands better control at the bottom.
How can I check my dip depth on my own?
Film from the side at chest height and pause at the lowest point of a rep, then compare your upper arm to horizontal. Real-time self-checking does not work because looking down changes your posture. Stance reads depth, shoulder shrug and swing from the clip and reports which one is limiting the set.
